Since our state is witnessing dowry related deaths and other savage attacks on women it is worth to create a massive awareness and thus a webinar was conducted on the topic “Increasing cases of Domestic Violence in Kerala” under the aegis of LJRF Centre for Women and Children and DLSA, Thiruvananthapuram on November 8, Monday 5 pm.The Webinar was well attended by legal fraternity and other people interested in legal matters.
The Webinar was coordinated throughout by Ms. Gayathri, Govt Law College, Calicut. The distinguished guests and the gathering were given a warm welcome by Adv. Rose Mariam Siby, the convenor, LJRF Centre for Women and Children.
Welcome address had been followed by a powerful presidential address by Mr K Vidyadharan, Secretary, DLSA, Thiruvananthapuram.. In his brief and noteworthy speech, he invited our attention to various laws in favour of women and Children in our country and the measures to be taken in case of any violence and anti social activities against women and children.
In his commendable Inaugural address, Mr Nisar Ahmed K T, District Judge, Secretary, KELSA invited our attention to the various legal provisions related to free legal aid to the women and children.
The enlightening address made by Ms Gifty Oommen, Asso. Professor, Govt Law College, Ernakulam stressed the importance of the awareness regarding the women’s rights and women empowerment to avoid the incidences of domestic violence.
The notable special address given by Adv Leela Krishnan stressed the need for strengthening the family bonding based on mutual respect and mutual understanding between partners to avoid domestic violence and she mentioned that self defence from the part of a women is the best defence in case of violence. Adv. M S Thara, member to Kerala Women’s Commission was also present for the event.
The results of the short film contest, initiated to create the awareness against the concept of dowry , among the five year and three year LLB coursed were declared by Adv . Rose Mariam Siby, Convener LJRF centre for women and children. The first position was backed by Haritha JB of CSI Institute of legal studies, Cheruvarakonam followed by Anna Irene Biju, BA LLB, MAR GREGORIOS COLLEGE OF LAW, TRIVANDRUM and Rethi RR,Govt law College Trivandrum in second and third positions respectively.
Winners were selected by eminent jury comprising of A . Mohammad, passionate and well known photographer. Bibin Balachandran, a renowned art critic and historian and M G Aneesh, an eminent documentary film maker and media person.
The end note to the webinar was marked by the vote of thanks extended by Adv Surya Menon, Editor to LJRF voice.
