A Campus Lesson From Alappuzha

College students in Alappuzha is travelling along the paths of goodness and love beyond educational books. Social Justice Cadet was inaugurated in Valiyakulum Ward, Alappuzha, Kerala, aimed at supporting marginalized communities, especially transgender individuals, women, and other vulnerable groups. This initiative was organized with the support of various departments and local leaders to ensure that marginalized sections of society receive essential services and assistance.

The ceremony was inaugurated by Dr. R. Bindu, Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice, with notable attendees including representatives from various local colleges and community leaders. The inauguration ceremony also witnessed the participation of officials, including MLAs and district-level officers, who emphasized the need for community welfare services. Notably, the event was led by MLA B. Aslam, who highlighted the office’s role in providing resources and assistance to marginalized individuals, ensuring they can access government schemes and other benefits effectively.

Minister R. Bindu stated that the project prepared by the District Social Justice Office will be implemented in other districts as well. The cadets will assist individuals with disabilities, the elderly, transgender people, those with mental illnesses, victims of domestic violence, former prisoners, and dependents of prisoners. The cadets will help identify beneficiaries of welfare schemes and apply for assistance online. They will also visit those residing in old age homes and de-addiction centers.

This initiative involves active participation and support from students and staff of several colleges in the region, including SD College, St. Michael’s College, St. Joseph’s College, St. Aloysius College, MSM College, TKMM College, NSS College, Government College Ambalapuzha, Bishop Moore College and Christian College. The colleges involved will collaborate with the Social Justice Department to conduct workshops, training sessions, and awareness programs, providing a platform for students to engage in community service.

Scheduled for its first training session on November 15, 2023, the office aims to provide online documentation support and consultancy, enabling beneficiaries to access these services efficiently. It will also conduct capacity-building programs, helping community members improve their skills and knowledge.

This Social Justice Office inauguration marks a significant step towards inclusivity and community support in Alappuzha, paving the way for more government-led initiatives for social equity.
