Constitution is the most powerful yet the most estranged document for the Common Man in India. So, how can law students create an impact on its awareness?
NSS Unit No. 136, Government Law College Kozhikode shows how.
ARTICLE 1- ANEKTA MEIN EKTA (UNITY IN DIVERSITY) [Camp n Fest] was a three-day residential Camp programme organized by the students of the NSS Unit No. 136 of Government Law College, Kozhikode. It was held from 5th to 7th January 2024 at Government Law College, Kozhikode.
Selected NSS (National Service Scheme) volunteer students from various disciplines across the five districts (Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur and Wayanad) had the opportunity to attend this camp. The vision of this event was to create a sense of awareness of the Constitution of India among students aloof from the legal background with a main focus on Article 1.
On the opening day, the Camp kicked off with a message from the NSS Coordinator, Calicut University, Dr. N M Shihab followed by an Ice breaking session – ‘Onnayi Munneram‘ by Sri. Brahmanayakam Mahadevan, an NSS National Trainer and motivational speaker. Sri. Vidyut K S, Principal (IC), GLC Kozhikode rendered the Presidential address and Dr. Beena Philip M, Worshipful Mayor, Kozhikode Corporation inaugurated the camp.
The consecutive days were jam-packed with interactive sessions by eminent personalities. ‘History @ 77: Evolution of Constitution‘ by Sri. P T Nazer, Journalist followed by a Panel discussion on “India – that is Bharat” with Sri. Rahul Raj, State Coordinator of Kerala State Youth Commission, Smt. Sneha Padayan, an Activist and Prof. Raniyal Niyada of BMS College of Law, Bengaluru as the panellists and moderated by Ms. Amrutha Lanan, NSS volunteer of GLCK. The final day witnessed another panel discussion on the theme ‘Lingasamathwavum Civil Codeum (Gender Equality and Civil Code)‘. Adv. P M Athira, Social Activist and Smt. Soumya Soman, Former Member SC/ST Commission headed the panel, and the discussion was moderated by Mr. Muhammed Ziyad, a volunteer of NSS, GLCK. Sri. Vidyut K S, Principal(IC) of GLC Kozhikode was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function. Adv. Shyam Padman, Alumni Association President GLC, Kozhikode gave the felicitation address with insights into the Constitution. The active participation of the students in these mind-boggling sessions was indeed the success of this exclusive camp.
The camp was not only educational vide discussions and talks but was filled with activities such a quiz programme, an informative and useful exhibition, a screening of the movie “Article 15” directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Ayushmann Khuranna, a cultural event and treasure hunt. Mr. Aakash from Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College, Kozhikode was acknowledged as the Best Camper in the programme. This three-day camp was an effort of the entire NSS Unit no. 136 under the aegis of Dr. Lawwellmann P., the Program Officer and Mr. Vishnu Chembakassery & Mr. Akshay Kumar C S, secretaries of the unit.
“The camp was well received and well accepted. The fact that we could spread the Constitutional principles to the non-law students and especially through a group of NSS volunteers was an achievement and as a NSS officer and Law teacher I am happy about it”, conveyed Dr. Lawwellmann.
