B.R Ambedkar International Academic Chair established in Kottarakkara
A significant step towards promoting academic research and social awareness has been initiated with the establishment of the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar International Academic Chair in Kottarakkara. The initiative aims to create a platform for scholarly discussion, research, and public engagement based on the ideas and principles of B. R. Ambedkar.
The centre is being set up with the objective of encouraging academic studies on Ambedkar’s contributions to social justice, constitutional values, equality, and democratic governance. The initiative will focus on organizing seminars, research programmes, and educational activities that help students, scholars, and the general public understand the relevance of Ambedkar’s thoughts in contemporary society.
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar International Academic Chair, regarded as a matter of pride for Kottarakkara, established at the KILA campus in a building of approximately 3,500 square feet. Dedicated to the ideals and legacy of B. R. Ambedkar, the centre serves as a hub for research, academic activities, and historical exhibitions on constitutional values, social justice, and democratic principles. The facility includes a spacious library, museum, exhibition galleries, and arrangements for national and international seminars, aiming to attract students, scholars, and researchers from across Kerala and other parts of India. An initial allocation of ₹50 lakh was made from the state budget, with further development initiatives planned.
The building was inaugurated on March 10, 2026, at 10 a.m. by Minister M. B. Rajesh, the Minister for Local Self-Governments, Excise, and Parliamentary Affairs, as the chief guest, with Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal presiding. Distinguished guests included noted actor and cultural figure Prakash Raj, Shri Nissamudheen A., IAS, Director General of KILA; Shri Sudeshan V., Chairman of the report presentation; Shri Kodikkunnil Suresh, MP; Dr. R. Lathadevi, President of Kollam District Panchayat; and senior officials from local administration. Local leaders including Smt. Anita Gopakumar (Chairperson, Kottarakkara Municipality), Smt. Bindu S. (President, Kottarakkara Block Panchayat), and presidents of nearby Gram Panchayats also extended their felicitations.
A seminar was held on the same day starting at 11:00 a.m., themed “The Indian Constitution and Dr. B. R. Ambedkar”, inaugurated by Dr. G. Mohan Gopal. The presentations were delivered by constitutional expert Smt. S. Ush, Principal of Sree Narayana Guru College of Legal Studies, Kollam, Dr. Malavika Binny, Assistant Professor at Kannur University, and other notable participants including poet Shri Kurippuzha Sreekumar, library council representative Shri K. P. Sajinath, and advocate Shri C. K. Pradeep Kumar. The day concluded with a cultural evening at 4:00 p.m.
The centre is expected to function as an important study and research institution promoting Ambedkar’s vision, constitutional awareness, and social development initiatives for the public.

The facility is expected to host lectures, workshops, and discussions involving scholars, social activists, and researchers from different parts of the country.
