With the increasing backlog of cases adding pressure to judiciary, the traditional litigation process is gradually taking a back seat with the evolution of alternative dispute resolution methods such as arbitration which is faster, confidential, flexible and cost effective. With a slow paced economic growth, the South Asian Countries account for a large chunk of world’s vulnerable and marginalized societies. For over a decade now, countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have vastly invested in the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) spectrum to stimulate the emancipation of the disputants by way of peaceful settlement.
To discuss on the growing trends in arbitration at SAARC regions, the Overseas Relations Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka is organizing a hybrid session on 16th November 2023, from 4 PM to 6 PM (GMT + 5:30) at CCC-ICLP ADR Centre, Colombo and via ZOOM platform.
ABOUT BAR ASSOCIATION OF SRI LANKA (BASL)
The legal profession in Sri Lanka was recognized by the Charter of Justice in the year 1802. Prior to 1974, the legal profession consisted of two branches namely the Advocates of Sri Lanka and the Proctors of Sri Lanka.
The ‘Bar Council of Sri Lanka’ represented the Advocates in Sri Lanka and the ‘Law Society of Sri Lanka’ represented the Proctors in Sri Lanka in all matters affecting their respective practices.
With the enactment of the Administration of Justice Law No. 44 of 1973, the said two branches were amalgamated into a single group of legal practitioners named as Attorneys-at-Law.
In 1974, pursuant to the enactment of this Law, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka was established as the apex body and organization for all Attorneys-at-Law in Sri Lanka.
