Kollam-India’s first constitution literate district

The Constitution literacy campaign known as “The Citizen Campaign ” jointly launched by the Kollam district panchayat, District Planning Committee and the Kerala Institute of Local Administration earned a magnificent triumph. The objective of this campaign was to provide constitutional literacy to 23 lakh citizens belonging to 7 lakh families based in Kollam. Awareness classes were organized to around 90 percent of the people in the district. The 7-month campaign drive covered schools, offices, auto stands and tribal councils to spread constitutional literacy.

As part and parcel of the glorious effort, around 17 lakh citizens above the age of 10 have been educated on various aspects of the Indian Constitution and this strenuous process involved 2,200 senators aiding in achieving the aim. 

Kollam district was officially declared India’s first Constitution literate district by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday and the authorities informed that the campaign will continue even after that.

“Secularism is constitutional. No religion is above or below another. Efforts to deviate people from secular values should be seen seriously. Here there is freedom to live without faith in religion. Majority of the people are secular. Attempts should be made to promote scientific temper and rationality.” said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The declaration ceremony was hosted in Kollam Town Hall at 11.00 am on and was attended by numerous leaders, including Minister for Animal Husbandry Smt.J Chinchurani, Mayor Prasanna Earnest, NK Premachandran MP, District Collector Afsana Praveen, M Naushad MLA, Kovoor Kunjumon MLA, Dr Sujith Vijayan MLA, PS Supal MLA, CR Mahesh MLA and district panchayat president Sam K Daniel.
