ABOUT JUSTICE CHANDRU

Justice Krishnaswami Chandru is an Indian advocate and former judge of the Madras High Court. He has disposed of 96,000 cases during his tenure as a Judge, and he is also known for a case that took place in 1993 when he was practising as a lawyer, to which the film Jai Bhim is dedicated. True to its title, it explains how he, a rebel, student leader, Communist, labour lawyer, and fierce critic of the judiciary, was able to rise from the Bar to the Bench. He as an advocate practised both on the criminal and civil sides in the Madras High Court. He was made an Additional Judge of the High Court on July 31, 2006, and was made a permanent Judge on November 9, 2009. Justice K. Chandru was a well-respected judge among the judiciary and is known for his judgments that impacted the lives of many impoverished and downtrodden people. During his judicial career, Justice K. Chandru pronounced over 96,000 verdicts. He was known for fighting against caste discrimination and for the rights of backward communities in Tamil Nadu. He retired as a judge in 2013.

Government Law College Thiruvananthapuram stands proud in the brilliance of a thousand legal suns, risen from its stellar existence of over a hundred and forty-five years. The institution which was the brainchild of the Maharaja of Travancore was conceived on 31 st January 1875 and has successfully carved out a golden niche in the legal fraternity of this country.

The College boasts of its enviable alumni spread across the globe in various facets of life. Legal luminaries like Late Mr.N.R.Madhava Menon, father of the modern legal education in the country, Justice Fathima Beevi, the first woman Judge of the Supreme Court, numerous judges of the apex court, High Courts, Civil servants, parliamentarians, business visionaries and Oscar winner, Resul Pookutty, form the ethos of the college and has ensured to contribute rich and talented manpower to the society. The grand old college of the state offers a Five Year Integrated LL.B undergraduate program which is a double degree integrated course comprising a BA (English Literature) and a Law degree.

The college also conducts a Three Year LL.B program and a Post-Graduate degree in Law. The students are selected for the course after a common entrance test conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations, under the Government of Kerala.

The institution has a Research Centre, under the University of Kerala, where several scholars are pursuing their research in Law. A full-fledged Law Library, which has the most extensive collection of law books in the state, a Cyber Station, a Language Lab, and a Ladies’ Hostel are also part of the college. Well-qualified and dedicated teachers with UGC NET or JRF guide the students through the academic sessions.

The college is well known for the International or National Seminars, Symposiums, and Workshops, conducted throughout the year, along with the All India Moot Court Competition, the Alternate Dispute Redressal (ADR) Competition, and Trial Advocacy Competition which sees the participation of students from institutions across the country.

DR. A. SUHRUTH KUMAR CENTRE FOR LAW SOCIETY AND JUSTICE (CLSJ) 

Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram (GLCT) as part of a law entity, makes a new step in society for the implementation of justice. The educational institution initiated ‘Dr. A. Suhruth Kumar Centre for Law Society and Justice’ (CLSJ) in commemoration and fond remembrance of Late Dr. A. Suhruth Kumar, Associate Professor (Retd.) and Former Secretary, KGOA, as a mark of respect for his invaluable and impeccable service in the government law colleges in Kerala. The Centre aims to provide an interface to students about legal education, the legal profession, and legal support; financial assistance to students of all Government Law Colleges in Kerala who are socially and educationally backward for doing internships; academic help and support to the students in various subject matters and to initiate on the interactive skill development program for students. The Centre was inaugurated on 31st March 2022 by Honorable Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice, Dr. R. Bindhu in virtual mode via Google meet.

ABOUT THE LAW LECTURE SERIES

Dr. A Suhruth Kumar Centre for Law Society and Justice, Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, is organizing LAW LECTURE SERIES IN COMMEMORATION OF Dr. A SUHRUTH KUMAR, former Associate Professor, GLC, Tvpm who devoted his career to public and community service. The Centre was launched with the objective inter alia to provide support in enhancing the professional competence of law students. One of such ventures in catering to the students’ benefits is organizing distinguished lectures by well-known personalities who have excelled in various fields. It gives us immense pleasure to invite you to the event of the 2nd Dr. A. Suhruth Kumar Memorial lecture on 10th August 2022, 10:15 am at Seminar Hall, GLC TVPM. The event will be graced by the distinguished Justice (Retd) K.
