In a quiet but powerful departure from tradition, a teacher and a village official solemnised their marriage by exchanging a copy of the Indian Constitution instead of customary symbols like the mangalsutra, rings, or saree.

P.S. Sheethal, a higher secondary school teacher from Kollam, and R. Jithin Krishna, a village assistant from Ayalur, registered their marriage at the Nenmara Sub-Registrar Office on January 1. The couple took a pledge together, affirming their union as equal citizens of India founded on mutual consent, dignity, and constitutional values.
Sheethal, an active member of the Constitution Literacy Council, said the idea was to let their marriage reflect the ideals they believe in. Jithin echoed the sentiment, stating that the ceremony was intended to send a message that constitutional morality and equality can meaningfully shape personal choices.
Family members were present as witnesses, alongside the Constitution itself, symbolising a union rooted in democratic values rather than ritualistic conventions.
