8 VACANCIES FOR THE POST OF PROBATION OFFICER: SOCIAL JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
WHAT IS A PROBATION?
Probation is a term derived from the Latin word Probare, which means to test or to prove. A person who has committed a crime has to obey the law and be supervised by a probation officer rather than being sent to jail. This period of time is called a PROBATION. Probation mainly deals with the rehabilitation of the defendant, protecting the society from further criminal conduct by the defendant and to protect the rights of the victim. Probation is typically granted by courts for first-time or low-risk offenders.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A PROBATION PERIOD:
- Probation strives to lead the offender to the path of reform, by guiding him to take up an activity which can provide him some earnings and thus enable him to pick up those life habits which are necessary for a member who abides by the law of the community.
- This period inculcates the person with a sense of self-sufficiency, self-control and confidence, which are the essential traits for a free life.
- The Probation Officer guides the offender to rehabilitate himself and tries to lead him in eradicating any such criminal tendencies.
- During this period of time, the offender is sent to learn at various educational, vocational and industrial institutions to train him for a profession that may help him secure a livelihood for himself after being released and thus can lead a reputable life.
- And regardless of the work an offender is doing as a probationer, that work is to contribute to the national economy. Thus, he no longer remains a burden to the society.
