The College students are now stepping in to support marginalized and underprivileged communities. The Social Justice Cell, implemented under the leadership of the District Social Justice Department, is the initiative through which this support will be extended. According to officials from the District Social Justice Department, the first phase of training for the social justice cadets has been successfully completed. This is the first project of its kind in the state.
The program aims to provide necessary assistance for applying to various government schemes online and submitting relevant documents. In the next phase, cadets will be trained on how to apply online through the Sunidhi Portal. The initiative also includes conducting drug awareness classes in collaboration with the District Medical Office, aiming to spread this message to the grassroots level.
Project Details
The program targets providing support to senior citizens, people with disabilities, transgender individuals, those facing mental health challenges, crime victims, former prisoners, and their dependents. One college from each constituency will be selected for the project. Around 20-30 selected students will receive practical training and awareness sessions. They will visit old age homes and rehabilitation centers under the Social Justice Department. The trained students, designated as master volunteers, are also expected to conduct sessions for younger students in smaller classes.
Benefits for All
The department’s schemes primarily focus on senior citizens and people with disabilities. There are approximately 350,000 senior citizens and around 55,000 people with disabilities in the district. The Social Justice Cell project aims to deliver these benefits to everyone, working towards alleviating isolation and ensuring access to the department’s various schemes.
