Al – Azhar Law College is set to host a two – day National Conference (Online) on the theme, “Indian Federalism – The Current Context”, Organized by IQAC, AALC on 22nd & 23rd June 2024. This virtual event aims to bring together scholars, legal experts, policymakers, and students from across the country to engage in a comprehensive dialogue about the dynamic and evolving nature of federalism in India. Federalism, as a system of governance, is integral to the democratic framework of India. It delineates the distribution of powers and responsibilities between the central and state governments, ensuring a balance that accommodates the diverse socio-cultural and economic fabric of the nation. However, the landscape of Indian federalism is constantly being reshaped by political, economic, and social changes.

Call For Paper
Invitation for Research Papers and paper presentation on Indian Federalism The Current Context in commemoration of 75 years of Indian Constitution.
The Indian Constitution makers adopted a unique model of a federal structure for independent India which is often called ‘centralized federalism’. Unlike the classical federalism like the United States (US) or Canada, our Constitution provides superior power to Union Government in comparison to the State Governments. The Union list contains more subjects than the State list and its law prevails over states even on the subjects in the Concurrent list. Also, the Parliament can legislate on any state subject under extraordinary circumstances. At the same time, it is pertinent to note that our Constitution also follows the principle of division of powers and envisages federal features like dual polity and demarcated jurisdiction of powers between the Centre and the States.
In recent times, there are some problems that have produced conflicts and tensions between Centre and the States and among the States on a number of occasions. Thus, it seems that Indian federalism has to face various contemporary challenges in its true functioning in terms of changing policies and institutions of central government.
As Indian Constitution completes its 75 years of existence, it is essential to retrospect its nature and working and its impact on governance of our country. This call for papers and presentation aims to provide a platform for critical analysis and discussion about the concept of Federalism, its relentless trans- formation during the last 75 years and the measures to be adopted to foster competitive and cooperative federalism. It is our hope that this discourse will contribute to a deeper understanding of this important legal principle and its implications for the Indian legal system.
