BREAKING BARRIERS : KERALA UNIVERSITY APPROVES LAW EXAMINATION IN MALAYALAM.

The Academic Council of Kerala University has recently taken a big and welcoming step. They have decided to allow students to write their law examinations in Malayalam. This decision opens a fresh opportunity for many aspiring lawyers who find it easier and more natural to express themselves in their mother tongue.

Historically legal education in India has mostly relied on English. While English is certainly useful, it has also been a huge hurdle for many bright students. Those coming from Malayalam-medium schools often knew the legal concepts well, but they struggled to write long legal answers in English. This created an unfair disadvantage where a student’s language skill mattered more than their actual understanding of the law.

This progressive change is closely aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP), which strongly emphasizes promoting education in regional languages and mother tongues. By embracing this vision, Kerala University is taking a major step forward in making legal education more practical and culturally grounded. When students can read and write in a language they speak every day, they can focus entirely on understanding complex laws instead of translating sentences in their heads. It builds their confidence and allows them to write more thoughtful, clear, and detailed answers during exams.

In addition, this change makes legal education much more inclusive. Students from all backgrounds, especially rural areas, can now confidently choose law as a career. It also brings the law closer to ordinary people. When lawyers and legal experts learn concepts in the local language, they can explain rights, remedies, and courtroom processes to common citizens in a way everyone can easily understand. Kerala University’s move is a deeply practical and compassionate reform. By replacing language barriers with freedom of expression, it ensures that every student gets a fair chance to succeed based on their knowledge and talent alone.
