In a story that exemplifies resilience and determination, 29-year-old Muhammed Yaseen from Vilayur, a small village in Kerala’s Palakkad district, has defied all odds to achieve his dream of becoming a Magistrate. Once known as the “newspaper boy of Vilayur,” Yaseen recently secured the second rank in the Kerala Judicial Service Examination, proving that perseverance can triumph over adversity.
Yaseen’s journey was far from easy. Raised by a single mother after being abandoned by his father at the age of three, he grew up in poverty, enduring societal insults and financial hardships. To support his family, he started working at the age of seven, taking up jobs as a newspaper delivery boy, milk supplier, painter, construction worker, and food delivery agent.
Despite these challenges, Yaseen never lost sight of his dreams. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration and a diploma in Electronics, he joined Ernakulam Government Law College in 2019 to pursue a career in law. Balancing his studies with night shifts as a food delivery agent, he demonstrated remarkable dedication.
Initially perceived as an average student, Yaseen quickly proved his mettle, ranking among the top five students in his university from the second semester onward. His achievements extended beyond academics, excelling in moot court competitions and overcoming language barriers as a Malayalam-medium school graduate.
Graduating with an LLB degree, Yaseen began practicing law in March 2023 and was soon recognized for his exceptional performance, earning the Outstanding Lawyer Award in his first year of practice. Throughout his journey, Yaseen relied on second-hand books and the support of mentors like his senior, Advocate Shahul Hameed PT, who provided him a space to grow professionally.
Reflecting on his journey, Yaseen attributes his success to his resilience and unwavering belief in turning challenges into opportunities. “Life’s struggles were my investments, and I knew they would pay off,” he said.
Now a Magistrate, Yaseen remains committed to serving justice and uplifting oppressed communities. “As someone who has lived through hardship, I will always represent those who face similar struggles,” he stated.
