The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur offers two- year LLM programme, in three main specialisations. The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law (RGSOIPL) established in 2006, RGSOIPL is India’s first law school within the IIT system and has developed a distinct academic ecosystem that integrates legal education with scientific and technological innovation. The LL.M. programme is designed for law graduates seeking advanced academic training and research opportunities in specialised areas of law.
About the Programme
The LL.M. programme at RGSOIPL, IIT Kharagpur is a full-time residential programme, spanning two years (comprising four semesters), conducted at the IIT Kharagpur campus. The curriculum combines advanced coursework with research, enabling students to develop expertise in specialised legal domains. The Applicants will have two specialisation preferences while submitting the application. Allocation of specialisation is based on the candidate’s merit, preferences, and seat availability.
Once allotted, the specialisation cannot be changed. The programmes which are offered currently are:
- Intellectual Property Law
- International Law
- Criminal Law

The application is to be submitted online through the website of IIT Kharagpur, by uploading required documents and fee payment.
All applicants should keep the following documents ready while completing the online application:
- Qualifying degree certificates and mark sheets.
- Latest semester grade sheet (for final-year candidates).
- Valid EWS/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/PwD certificate, wherever applicable.

Selection Process
The selection/ admission is made based on the Computer – Based Test (CBT) of 2 hrs duration. The syllabus would include Bar council of India approved LLB Syllabus including Alternate Dispute Resolution, International Laws, Contracts Laws, Drafting Pleading & Conveyancing, Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws, Criminal Laws, Procedural Laws, Corporate Laws, Taxation Laws, Jurisprudence, Law of Torts, Property Laws, Administrative Law, Environmental Laws, Labour Laws, Constitutional Law, Family Law, Professional Ethics & Accounting, Information Technology Laws. There will be 120 MCQ questions of 1 mark each. There is no negative marking for wrong answers.
Eligibility Criteria

The basic criteria includes- Candidates must satisfy either of the following eligibility requirements:
- First Class (or equivalent) in a five-year integrated LL.B./B.L. programme from a recognised university; or
- First Class (or equivalent) in a three-year LL.B./B.L. programme from a recognised university along with a bachelor’s degree (minimum three years) in Humanities, Science, Commerce, or an equivalent discipline.
