The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is a Central University located in Shillong, Meghalaya, established by an Act of Parliament in 1973. With the motto “Rise Up and Build,” NEHU’s main campus is located at Umshing Mawkynroh, Shillong.
About the Department of Law
The Department of Law, NEHU, established in 2005, offers B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M., and Ph.D. programmes to over 300 students, and runs its flagship NEHU National Moot Court Competition to promote mooting among law students.
About the Competition
The 3rd NEHU National Moot Court Competition, 2026, returns after 8 years, following successful editions in 2016 and 2018. The competition aims to engage law students in contemporary legal discourse and strengthen skills in legal research, memorial drafting, and oral advocacy.
Eligibility
- Students enrolled in a regular Undergraduate Law Programme (3-year or 5-year LL.B.) or Postgraduate Law Programme (LL.M.), from an institution recognised by the Bar Council of India, are eligible.
- Each University, Law School, or College may nominate only one team.
Team Composition
- The competition will accommodate a maximum of 36 teams.
- Each team shall consist of 2 or 3 members.
- 3-member teams: 2 Speakers + 1 Researcher.
- 2-member teams: both members are Speakers; either may undertake the Researcher Test.
Competition Structure
- Qualification: 36 teams → 16 (Octa-Finals) → 8 (Quarter-Finals) → 4 (Semi-Finals) → 2 (Final)
- Preliminary Round: Virtual, via Google Meet, on 29th-30th September 2026
- Octa-Final to Final Rounds: Physical, at Department of Law, NEHU, Shillong, on 29th-30th October 2026
- Researchers’ Test: Physical, on 29th October 2026, for teams qualifying for the physical round
Registration
- Registration fee: Rs. 1,500/- per team (non-refundable, non-transferable)
- Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis
- Teams qualifying for the Physical Rounds will be provided with complimentary accommodation and meals
- Teams advancing to the Octa-Finals onward must complete an additional physical registration and verification process on arrival
