October 1 is observed as the International Day for Older Persons in order to raise awareness on the rights and welfare of the elderly people.”Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons: Across Generations” is the theme for this year put forward by the United Nations. The week for older persons is being observed in Alappuzha district from October 1st to October 7. The program was inaugurated by Adv. U. Pratibha MLA at Govt. High School, Pathiyoor. The meeting was presided by Smt. K.G. Rajeshwari, President, District Grama Panchayath.Various programs are being conducted in connection with this by the Social Justice Department with the collaboration of various government departments, local self-governing bodies, social and voluntary organizations. Abeen .AO, District Social Justice Officer will be speaking on ‘Elderly Welfare Plans and Programs’ on Radio Help Desk on October 6 at 8.00 pm and on October 7 at 11 am.
